stop
let your mind relax
look...
let your senses open
listen...
let your attention deepen
rest...
attuned...
awake...
alive.

Mindfulness is simply the ability to be present and open in this moment.

Mindfulness Based Education (MBE) builds on that ability to bring forward the natural intelligence and compassion present in each of us.  MBE includes the teaching of meditation, as well the mindful practice of the contemplative and expressive arts in support of learning and personal transformation.

The educational benefit of teaching meditation is both well researched and documented.  This research indicates that teaching mediation leads to increases in

  • the ability to pay attention,
  • working memory, planning, and organizational skills
  • social skills
  • self esteem
  • emotional self-regulation.

The research also indicates that teaching meditation also decreases:

  • testing anxiety
  • ADHD behaviors, specifically hyperactivity and impulsivity
  • Negative emotions
  • Conduct and anger management problems

Research on teaching meditation also indicates a neurological benefit of teaching meditation.  The practice of meditation improves and strengthens neuronal connections between the thinking brain (frontal cortex) and the emotional brain (amygdala).  Meditating therefore improves cognitive functioning and regulation.  This measurable, physiological benefit underlies the benefits of MBE.
